Can Dogs Eat Sweet Potatoes? From a Toronto Church to Buddy’s Favorite Treat

One of the things I love most about living in Toronto is the sense of community. After the service this past Sunday, our local church was sharing seasonal produce with everyone. A local farmer had donated a massive amount of beautiful, earthy sweet potatoes. I made a $10 donation and brought home a heavy bag—about 10 pounds of fresh, unprocessed goodness!

Holding these ingredients in my kitchen, I thought: Why not make Buddy a homemade version of a Thanksgiving classic? Even though Thanksgiving is still months away, spring in Ontario is the perfect season to start prepping healthy, natural treats for our dogs.

Many people don’t realize that dogs can safely enjoy sweet potatoes, especially when they are baked or steamed. The most important rule? They must be served plain. I personally love making Baked Sweet Potato Fries for Buddy. I usually make a large batch at once because the baked strips are much easier to store and stay fresh for much longer than steamed ones.

Of course, if you prefer to steam or boil them, those are also excellent and healthy options! While they don't store as long as the baked ones, they are incredibly soft and easy to digest—perfect for mixing into their regular meals.

Why Sweet Potatoes are a "Superfood" for Your Dog:

  • 🥕 Packed with Dietary Fiber: Fantastic for digestion! If your dog has a sensitive tummy (like Buddy), the natural fiber helps keep things moving smoothly.
  • ✨ A Boost of Vitamin A: Essential for maintaining healthy skin, a shiny coat, and strong eyesight. It’s like a natural beauty treatment from the inside out!
  • 💪 Low Fat, High Energy: Unlike greasy restaurant fries (like those deep-orange ones at Jack Astor's), home-cooked sweet potatoes provide complex carbohydrates for lasting energy without the "bad" fats.
  • 🛡️ Immune Support: Rich in Vitamins C and B6, which help strengthen your dog’s immune system against Toronto’s unpredictable spring weather.

⚠️ Essential Safety Tips & Serving Sizes

Before you start sharing these golden nuggets, here is what every "Dog Parent" should keep in mind to keep their pup safe:

  • Never Raw: Raw sweet potatoes are too tough for a dog's digestive system and can cause painful bloating. Always cook them until soft.
  • Keep it Plain: No butter, no salt, and definitely no maple syrup or marshmallows!
  • The 10% Rule: Treats should only make up 10% of your dog's daily calories. For a medium dog like Buddy, a small handful of pieces or 2-3 baked strips is plenty!

My Pro Tip for Storage: Since the baking process slightly dehydrates the strips, they stay fresh in an airtight container for up to two weeks. It’s much cheaper and healthier than those store-bought treats that often contain preservatives!

Always introduce new treats slowly to see how your dog reacts. If they love it as much as Buddy does, you’ve found a winner for your homemade treat rotation!
